From the top of its promontory, the phare de l'Anse-à-la-Cabane, in Bassin, used to light and guide sailors and fishermen that would venture in the waters of the Îles de la Madeleine. This lighthouse, like all the other ones on the Islands, was built by the government of Canada between 1870 and 1874, to mark out the St. Lawrence Seaway. Nowadays, the lighthouse is still in function, but is controlled by a computer.
