The word grave is a distortion of the word « grève », which is a French word for small shore. The La Grave site was classified historic site in 1983 by the ministère des Affaires culturelles. This classification makes it the most important historic district of the island. This place used to be an important fishing and trading place. The entire village would meet here.
Nowadays, La Grave is still a meeting and trading place where preservation and exploitation of traditional architecture are emphasized. Visitors can also go shopping in the handicraft boutiques and stop at the Musée de la Mer or at the Aquarium des Îles.
